Briefly about the Chevening scholarship and why you should apply for this scholarship

Chevening scholarships which started in 1983, are international scholarships funded by the British Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth office and allows foreign students with leadership qualities to study at any university in the United Kingdom. The main objective of the scheme is to build a network of relationships in the United Kingdom who will become future leaders in their various countries.

The scholarship started as a scheme called the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Awards Scheme (FCOAS). However, in the year 1994, the name of the scheme was changed to Chevening, after the Chevening House in Kent. In April 2012, the running of this scholarship scheme was taken over from the British Council by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and a secretariat was established, called Chevening Secretariat.

In 2011-2012, the number of the Chevening scholarships that were made available worldwide, was increased to seven hundred, in 2015-2016, the number again increased to one thousand five hundred and in 2017-2018, the number of scholarships was one thousand six hundred and fifty worldwide. In 2018, October precisely, the Chevening Scholarships Programme celebrated their 35th anniversary and awarded a total number of one thousand eight hundred scholarships from one hundred and sixty countries for the 2018-2019 academic year. Many Chevening scholars have since gone on in life to reach positions of influence in a wide range of sectors. Dividends for most of the Chevening scholarships include a living stipend, airfares and full or partial costs of tuition fees.

Eligibility Requirements for Chevening Scholarships

To be given preference for a Chevening Scholarship applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship has ended
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry into a postgraduate program at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honors degree in the UK, but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
  • Posses at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 15 July 2022.

Scholarship Merits

A Chevening Scholarship basically covers:

  1. University tuition fees
  2. A monthly living allowance
  3. An economy class return airfare to the UK, and

Method of Application

Applications open on 3rd August 2022. Therefore, applications for Chevening Awards can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the “apply” button on your country’s page. Scholarship applicants must also apply directly to their preferred universities in the UK, usually for taught master’s degree courses.
